Thank you to all who participated in the concerts this past week!! We had the Winter Concert, Chimes at Reid Park ZooLights, Drama in "Ebony Scrooge", and the Band in the Downtown Parade of Lights. WOW!!

The 5th grade concert is TOMORROW, December 17 at 2:15 in the MPR. The concert should run about 35 minutes. Dress is school clothes!

AUDITIONS for "Annie, Jr." will begin right after Break. Students should be turning in a sign up form and preparing a vocal solo over the break. Solos should be about 3 minutes, from a Broadway or Disney Musical, and can be sung with a CD or by themselves. This is for students in grades 6-8.

Students IN BAND, ORCHESTRA, STEEL DRUMS AND CHIMES should arrive by 6:30 p.m. CASES WILL BE STORED IN THE ROOM TO THE WEST OF THE "STAGE" FOR THE DURATION OF THE CONCERT.
CONCERT MANNERS: EVERYONE SHOULD BE STAYING FOR THE WHOLE CONCERT - NOT JUST THEIR PORTION!!

I will need some parents to walk with us in the parade and be WATER PARENTS. I have some spray bottles filled with water and you just squirt it in the player's mouth - no spreading of germs! Let me know if you can help.

Just like in written school assignments, if you don't keep up with your homework, you will start to fall behind! Falling behind leads to discouragement, not practicing, and finally quitting. I love September! The weather changes, autumn begins, my youngest daughter turns 21 this month and my birthday is on the 13th!
The 13th is a very important day to remember - IT'S PICTURE DAY at AOT Middle School. The Band, Orchestra, Steel Drums and Chimes will all have their group pictures taken on Thursday. Everyone should come to school dressed (they can change later) in their Music Uniform. Just a reminder; the Music Uniform is....Black Dress Pants, Black Dress shoes, Black socks, PLAIN white, collared shirts (can be long or short sleeved) I am told the pictures will be taken before 3rd period.PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR BAND OR ORCHESTRA INSTRUMENT!!!!!!

BAND
Beginning Band is off to a great start! Everyone should be practicing 10-15 minutes every day. The students are writing their practice assignments on the front inside cover of their books. Everyone should have STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE BOOK 1. Beginning Band meets every Monday and Thursday. We are already playing 3 notes.
ORCHESTRA
Beginning orchestra meets every Tuesday. Please make sure your child is sitting up tall, instrument in left hand and held out to the side (not in front), and bow is held properly (there are pictures in their book). This past week we learned to play 4 new notes on the D string and stickers were put on the fingerboards to help find the notes. Remember - it's a GUIDE - not exact. If strings get out of tune, students can always bring them to me and I will tune them. They can also be taken to Instrumental Music and they will tune them for free. Everyone should have ORCHESTRA EXPRESSIONS BOOK 1.
STEEL DRUMS AND CHIMES
are off to a great start! We could use 1 or 2 more players in CHIMES, but STEEL DRUMS is a full group.
ADVANCED BAND AND ORCHESTRA
has been working out of the lesson book and has been playing some arrangements. Both groups are sounding great!

This week in MUSIC..............
5th and 6th grade
have started playing the recorder in class. We know 3 notes; B,A,and G. There will be an assignment on Wednesday, August 29, that will be due on Friday, August 31. Music Class meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this year. We are singing and playing recorders on Monday and Wednesday. Friday is simply "Singing Day". Recorders may go home at any time, but the students need to remember to have their recorder in clas on Mondays and Wednesdays, or they will loose points on their Participation grade.
7th and 8th grade
started off the year learning about Note Values and Counting. We have had 2 assignments so far; 1) Syllabus signed and 2) Note Value worksheet. Class meets every Tuesday and Thursday and Homework is assigned on Tuesday. Homework is then due on Thursday. When a student is absent on homework day, I write their name on the assignment and put it on my whiteboard. It is their responsibility to get their homework and complete it before the due date.
On Tuesday, August 28, we will be continuing to learn about counting in music. There will be an assignment that will be due on Thursday, August 30. We sing at the beginning of every class. A Participation Grade is given for every class. Participation includes singing (I must be able to hear them), asking questions and being prepared. Being prepared means having a pencil (no pen!), Music Folder, Planner, and a reading book.

When a student is absent on homework day, I write their name on the assignment and put it on my whiteboard. It is their responsibility to get their homework and complete it before the due date.
On Tuesday, August 28, we will be continuing to learn about counting in music. There will be an assignment that will be due on Thursday, August 30. We sing at the beginning of every class. A Participation Grade is given for every class. Participation includes singing (I must be able to hear them), asking questions and being prepared. Being prepared means having a pencil (no pen!), Music Folder, Planner, and a reading book.
BAND
Beginning Band is off to a great start! Everyone should be practicing 10-15 minutes every day. The students are writing their practice assignments on the front inside cover of their books. Everyone should have STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE BOOK 1.
ORCHESTRA
Beginning orchestra meets every Tuesday. We are learning to pluck and bow on the strings and are only using "open strings" right now (not using any fingers on the left hand). Please make sure your child is sitting up tall, instrument in left hand and held out to the side (not in front), and bow is held properly (there are pictures in their book). Everyone should have ORCHESTRA EXPRESSIONS BOOK 1.
STEEL DRUMS AND CHIMES
are off to a great start! We could use 1 or 2 more players in CHIMES, but STEEL DRUMS is a full group.
